X Abstract

In their contributions to this issue of AJPS, Jackman and Miller (1996) and Swank (1996), have subjected our work, and that of Putnam (1993) to penetrating and forceful criticism. This rejoinder explains why we disagree with some of the points they made, responding first to the arguments by Jackman and Miller concerning the linkages between culture and democracy, and then engaging the criticisms by Jackman and Miller and by Swank concerning culture and economic development.
