X Abstract

This document describes the game design for Phase 2 of the Massive Multiplayer Reaching Out (MMRO) Work Package (WP10) of the Integrated Project on Pervasive Gaming (IPerG). It incorporates and updates the game design for Phase 1, taking into account the results from play tests and evaluations, and the current software development. The MMRO game, called Garden of Earthly Delights (GED), is an evolving concept for the extension of conventional Massively Multiplayer On-line Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) game mechanics to integrate pervasive, mobile and location-based game mechanics. GED is a fantasy role-playing game based upon a persistent, virtual, multiplayer 3D environment. However, the overall game is extended to include the physical world as a parallel game space within which players can access the game and control game characters via mobile technology. Mobile players can also interact within the game in ways that take their location into account. Core game systems of GED apply in both the virtual and the physical world. Those game mechanics include systems for characterisation, socialisation and magic. Objects and characters within the game are realised virtually. The MMRO design includes game play uniquely facilitated by the co-presences of a physical and a virtual game world, including three possible play models for mobile players based upon their relationship with the virtual game space: 1. game interaction limited to other mobile players and based only upon physical location, 2. game interaction within the virtual world using a mobile device as an interface but not using location data (in this case having limited functionality compared with PC players), and 3. location-based game play within the physical world ‘shadowed’ by a player avatar within the virtual world, including interaction with other players in both worlds. This document presents the design for the MMRO Phase 2 technology and playable game concept prototype that update and enhance the Phase 1 work.
