Abstract(From the chapter) Describes the development of a teacher-led, school-based sex education program, currently undergoing a randomized controlled trial in Scotland. The theoretical basis of the intervention is outlined and some of the practical difficulties encountered in translating theoretical ideas into potentially effective classroom sessions are discussed. The program, called the SHARE project (Sexual Health and Relationships: Safe Happy and Responsible) aims to reduce the incidence of unsafe sex, improve the quality of young people's sexual and romantic relationships, and reduce the rate of unwanted pregnancies. It is designed to be delivered over 2 school years to those below the minimum school leaving age of 16. The authors conclude that it is possible to develop a potentially effective, research-based, teacher-led sex education program that could be widely disseminated.
