The realisation that segregated bicycle facilities very often reduce safety, especially atjunctions is in no way new to professionals and advcates with a an interest in cycling. The "vehicular cycling" movemet builds on this to a large extent.

X Abstract

Title, translated: Many well-designed bicycle paths and -lanes have a positive effect, but single bicycle paths, will probably have a negative effect on safety. The article relates summaries and evalutions of research on the safety (and acessibility- ) effects of bicycle lanes and bicycle roads/paths. The conclusions are well known amongst professionals and advocates enlightened about bicycling: The facilities reduce safety at junctions, as cycists and car-drivers, nt least lorry-drivers become less aware of each other. However safety between junctions can be improved, and specific soltutions at junctions can improve safety. However, while segregated facilities increase the subjective feeling of safety amongst cyclists, which in combiation of their reduced visibility for car drivers, reduce safety, the perceived safety of segregated facilities will often make more people cycle. That in turn will improve safety for cyclists, in large part because car drivers will become more aware about cyclists, when their numbers grow. Various solutions like advanced stop lines improving visibility for cyclists, exist to improve the quality and safety of facilities for cyclists at junctions. The current study might underestimate the dangers of bicycle facilities, because many of the studies data are sought from stem from established bicycle cultures like Denmark and the Netherlands, where car drivers are much more aware of cyclists, as a result of their greater proportional numbers.
