X Abstract

This paper presents simple conceptual models of phenomena essential to the entrainment processes at the top of inversion-capped stratocumulus clouds. Mixing processes lead to formation of an interface layer between pure cloud and the top of the inversion as well as downdraughts of dry air that penetrate the cloud interior and form lsquocloud holesrsquo, spaces that have reduced liquid water content or are completely devoid of it. These processes are illustrated with one-dimensional models permitting estimation of interface layer thickness as well as the cloud hole parameters and conditions of formation. Results are in rough agreement with observations. Copyright © 2009 Royal Meteorological Society
