Notes for this articleA useful glossary on how place affects health. Argues that ``area effects'' are often found in studies but there is inadequate explanation as to what ``area effects'' actually are. Explains concepts related to the difference between space and place, class within places, scale, time and migration.
``In public health many studies refer to where people live (or work, or die) in space, omitting any consideration of ‘‘place’’. Such reductionism is useful in terms of study design (and mapping), but has the effect of masking the complexity of meaning and processes associated with place.''
