Notes for this articleSceptical commentary on the Acheson report. Criticises the choice of indicators used to measure health --- argues that some form of quality-adjusted life expectancy should have been used. Questions to what extent health inequalities are immoral --- relating the concept of a chance at a ``fair innings'' with lifestyle choices that ``throw this opportunity away''. Smoking habits are used to make this point, though the argument is limited as it doesn't take into account the addictive nature of smoking, simply assuming that lifestyle choices are the person's own fault.
