AbstractIn order to improve ozone generation, a new type of ozonizer is proposed, where a silent discharge and a surface discharge are generated in the separated discharge spaces at the same time. As the applied voltage is increased, the surface discharge begins first from the inner coil electrode, then the silent discharge occurs in the gap between the glass wall and the outer cylindrical electrode. It is observed that the silent discharge is enhanced and ozone generation by the silent discharge increases when the surface discharge on the coil electrode becomes active. Hence, the ozone generation is improved by up to 110 g/kWh in the case of N2+O2 mixture as a test gas and up to 274 g/kWh in oxygen gas
