A class of symbol synchronisation algorithms for binary baseband PAM which operate on samples of the matched filter output signal, taken at the decision instants are introduced. All these algorithms have nearly the same tracking performance at moderate to high <e1>E</e1><sub>b</sub>/<e1>N</e1><sub>0</sub>, a subclass of optimum algorithm is identified
