Abstract

The early outgrowth of pathways of the cranial nerve and spinal plexuses occurs during the middle to late embryonic period (4 to 7 weeks’ postconception) but functional maturation of those pathways may take until birth or later. Functional maturation of some key nerves such as the trigeminal, vagus, and phrenic is essential to effective respiratory and gastrointestinal function in the postnatal period and many of the problems of premature delivery arise from inadequate development of those neural pathways.
