The human brain is usually considered exceptional among mammalian brains: the most cognitively able, the largest-than-expected for its body, consuming an outstanding 20% of the total energy budget for the body despite representing only 2% of body mass, and endowed with an overdeveloped cerebral cortex. Such uniqueness was seemingly necessary to justify the superior cognitive abilities of humans over mammals with larger brains. In this chapter I present an alternative view – that, while being simply a scaled-up primate brain in its cellular composition, the human brain is remarkable in its cognitive abilities and metabolism because of its extremely large number of neurons.
