Abstract

Long-term variability in wind speeds can have substantial implications for the wind energy resource. A method is proposed to reconstruct near-surface monthly mean wind speeds from 1881 to the present, using a data set of gridded mean sea level pressure. The long-term wind speed at an upland site is reconstructed and presented as an example of the application of the method.
