AbstractThe Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive came into force on 1 January 1992, bringing with it an increased awareness of the importance of EMC in electromedical equipment. In this article, the author advocates that EMC should be considered early in the design stage of product development, when solutions to EMC problems and compliance with the requirements can often be introduced for very little cost. The author discusses a number of methods for tackling EMC problems, which will lead to enhanced product reliability, and therefore increased safety, as well as benefits in other areas of product quality.
