X Abstract

The influence of surface texture on initiation and propagation of small fatigue cracks has been studied in a forged Al---Mg---Si alloy. It has been found that the surface character had little effect on the growth rate although there was about 20% reduction in fatigue life for the as-forged surfaces. Examination of crack initiation mechanisms revealed that the impairment in fatigue life was a result of the presence of coarse particles in the as-forged surfaces rather than surface roughness. These coarse particles, which were inadvertently introduced during the forging process, were 20-80 [mu]m in diameter and considerably shorten the crack initiation period.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
