AbstractThis study forms part of a broader research programme on the ecology andeconomics of the East Kleinemonde estuary and forms part of a study which will culminate in an ecological-economics model to assess the potential impacts of changing river flows and management on the estuary. The main aim of this studywas to investigate the economic value of the East Kleinemonde estuary and how thisvalue might change with a change in estuary condition. In particular, the study concentrated on the direct use value (mainly recreational value) and the non-use (or existence) value of the estuary, since indirect use value (nursery value) is dealt with elsewhere. The main objectives of this study were as follows: To determine the direct use value of the East Kleinemonde estuary To derive a model which can be used to predict changes in direct use value as aresult of change in estuary characteristics To determine the non-use value of the estuary To determine how willingness to pay to prevent a loss of biodiversity changes with magnitude of loss To determine whether alternative water saving measures would be viable and their extra costs justified.
