X Abstract

The paper discusses the development of peripheral cities in a world where both globalization and economic integration are ever more the order of the day. The paper argues that the dynamics of peripheral cities and regions are not only a question of accessibility and the territory’s potential for development, arguing that the truly central question lies in the functioning of the forces of development, namely the productive set up, the diffusion of innovation, the territory’s urban development and changes and the capacity for adaptation of the institutional system. These are here held to be interdependent growth forces that generate externalities and reduce production costs through their reciprocal interaction thus giving drive to the development processes. The author’s position is based upon an analysis of the dynamics of the urban region of Vigo in Galicia, a peripheral region of the European Union.
