Abstract

We study QCD-like four dimensional theories in the theoretically controlled framework of deformation theory and/or twisted partition function on S*1 x R*3. By using duality, we show that a class of one-flavor theories exhibit new physical phenomena: discrete chiral symmetry breaking induced by the condensation of topological disorder operators, and confinement and the generation of mass gap due to new non-selfdual topological excitations. Abstract

In-medium chiral symmetry breaking in confining potential models of QCD is examined. Past attempts to analyse these models have been hampered by infrared divergences that appear at non-zero temperature. We argue that previous attempts to circumvent this problem are not satisfactory and demonstrate a simple resolution. We also show that the expectation that confining models do not exhibit a chiral phase transition is incorrect. We consider zero-temperature transitions from conformal to non-conformal phases in quantum theories. We argue that there are three generic mechanisms for the loss of conformality in any number of dimensions: (i) fixed point goes to zero coupling, (ii) fixed point runs off to infinite coupling, or (iii) an IR fixed point annihilates with a UV fixed point and they both disappear into the complex plane.
