X Abstract

MALE BETTAS SHOWED AGGRESSIVE DISPLAY AND FIGHTING MOVEMENTS TO THEIR IMAGE IN A MIRROR. THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR SERVED AS A REINFORCER FOR SWIMMING THROUGH A RING AND FOR SWIMMING DOWN A RUNWAY. POSITIVE RESULTS WITH THE RING COULD NOT BE EXPLAINED AS A RESULT OF INCREASED ACTIVITY. A COMPARISON IN THE RUNWAY OF PERFORMANCE FOR DISPLAY AND FOR FOOD REVEALED LARGE DIFFERENCES THAT SUGGEST THAT THE 2 REINFORCERS MAY DEPEND ON DIFFERENT MECHANISMS FOR THEIR EFFECTS.
