Abstract\\p 2: Everyone is a Sudra by birth; he becomes a <em>dvija</em> by the purificatory sacraments, <em>vipra</em> by the study of the Vedas and a <em>Brahmana</em> by the knowledge of Brahma. \\p.3 Brahmans learned in all the Shastras came on horseback to Gau\d da in the Saka year 954.. These weere the Medhasthi, Kshitisa, Bityarága, Shashimukha, Saubhari, Ratnagarva and Sudhánidhi. \\p.3 The nine distinguishing criteria of <em>kula</em> of the Kulinas are <em>ach</em>á<em>ra</em> (cleanliness of conduct), <em>vinaya</em> (discipline), <em>vidy</em>á (learning), <em>pratisth</em>á (social position), <em>t</em>\í<em>rthadarsana</em> (pilgrimage), <em>nisth</em>á (following the precepts of the Shastras), á<em>vrtti</em> (giving and taking girls to and from families of equal rank), <em>tapas</em> (austerities), and <em>d</em>á<em>na</em> (gifts). \\p.15, part 2, chapter 2, describes King Vallàla trying to borrow yet more money from Vallabha Nanda, a merchant, in order to make war on Udantapur. Vallabha says no and tells the king off. This led the king to oppress the Suvarnavaniks. \\ch. 3: Vallàla sees a cora (skinner caste) girl, falls in love, and marries her by the Gandharva rite. \\ch. 4: The kori queen is upset, and Vallàla promises her anything. She wants to go back to her simple forest life. Palace life is potentially sinful. She was followed by a lustful man, the king's son Lakùmana, when she went too the water closet. King v. angry. \\5. V. gets boatmen to fetch L back. \\6. In eastern Gauóa there's a place called Mahàsthàna where there's a big øivaliïga called Ugra. It's worshipped by everyone, including male and female Buddhist ascetics and the married buddhist occupants of Buddhist Vihàras (p.28). \\ch.7: V.'s beloved went there and worshipped. Then her priest, Valadeva, talked with the Mahant, Dharmagiri, calling him Bhadanta (= a buddhist). Got into a fight after asking for his share of the offerings and being refused, and was slapped and evicted by the Mahant. Vallàla heard all this, and banished the Mahant. \\8. pp.32--5 \\The king;'s in his splendid court in Gauda. Bhatta Sinha Giri, great scholar, comes from Badarikà÷rama to visit V. at his court. They are called the 5 Gaudas. S. of the Vindhya are Karnàtas, Tailangas, Gurjaras, Maharastras, and Andhras. They are the 5 dravidas. The Mathuras sprang from the sweat of the Boar incarnation. Magas are Brahmans who in ancient times issued from the disc of the sun and descended to Scythia like the flaming orb of the sun.. \\Then the other 2 dvija varnas. \\19. Various mixtures. An Ambastha was born of a vaisya mother and a brahman father. A Vaidya is the son of an Ambastha by a Vaisya mother. Different kinds of kayastha. p.73 "Often in course of time, caste rises in rank by meritorious acts." \\20. Rudragita. \\21. Sinha Giri says good bye, and urges the king to sacrifice with his young queen Siladevi, and so have a son with her. \\Saranadatta says that the sage then left. The king then gathered everyone and had a big ritual. Everyone is named. Really big occasion. Did a tuladana in gold. \\22. A fight breaks out and the Vaniks were insulted. \\23. King hears about it next day and is cross. Declares that the Sauvarnavaniks will hence be sudras. The vaniks retaliated by paying 2 or 3 times the normal price for slaves, and thus starving out the town of Gauda of servants. So the king said that the Kaivartas should be servants. \\The king gave an edict that the Sauvaranvaniks, who were still v. posh and were annoying the brahmans, should not wear the thread. Many migrated away. those who stayed, gave up the thread. \\The king saw that kshatriyas and brahmans were disorganised, and held a conference of vedajnas to sort it out. \\24. King V. endowed a fine monastery near Pradyumnesvara, at the suggestion of Sinha Giri. V. gave the village of Kasaraka in the province of Suvarnavakti to Ananta Sarma of Gautama gotra, for cultivation. He induced several brahmans from Dakshina to accept houses and live there. \\25. A sivastotra, the <em>Jayamangalagathakirtana</em> composed by Kalidas Nandi. \\26. DharmaGiri was banished. Seeking revenge, he found a mleccha lord called Báyádu;mba. He got B. to surround Vikramapur at night. the 5000 mleccha army The king won, but by accident his pigeon messengers escaped, and on receiving this signal, the queens immolated themselves. \\27. The king went back to his city, saw that the queens had burned, and himself jumped into the pyre and died,. he was 65 years old and had reigned 40 years and 2 months. Saka 1028. \\p.102-3: a final reflective passage expressing some doubts about the value of parts of the vyasa purana. Vaidyas are sat-sudras. of all the satsudras, kayyastha is the best. \\p. 103 The learned Ananda Bhatta, the progenitor of the race of wits with hearty benediction dedicates his composition the Vallàla Charita to raja Vudhimanta the lord of Navadvipa having previously read it before him at his court in the saka year 1400 plus the number of human teeth (thirtytwo) on the second day of thee waning moon in the month of Pous being the anniversary of his birth. \\He obtains merit in this world and supreme ... ,
