AbstractThe use of index entries for the searching and retrieval of books in terms of their content presents the opportunity to bring printed books into the mainstream of electronically accessible information. Instead of having only a few entry points to find a book, library users and bookstore customers will be able to search on hundreds or thousands of weighted terms. Lists the 4 tasks necessary to allow search and retrieval capability across multiple book indexes: index parsing; database loading; database searching; and reconstructed index display (including HTML index display). Discusses the elements involved in navigation tools, noting: alphabetic features; cross reference links; searching within the displayed index; and expanded capabilities. Includes practical examples of typical book searching and indexes constructed using the Perl scripting language with particular reference to the use of strings and filehandles.
